Day trip to Qeqertarsuaq on Disko Island – Greenland's largest island

Experience red-brown basalt mountains with eternal snow, a lush hinterland and 'Vorherres Blækhus'.

A sailing trip to Disko Island is a very special experience. The island is the size of Zealand, but contains only one town, namely the town of Qeqertarsuaq (Godhavn) with 900 inhabitants and the small settlement of KAngerluk with approx. 20 inhabitants.

On board the Targa 44 de luxe, we sail from Ilulissat with Diskoøen in sight. We enjoy the sailing trip past the large icebergs in the sea and the island's beautiful and characteristic basalt mountains, which are of volcanic origin, where the highest point almost 1,000 meters in the air. We often meet whales and seals on the trip.

After arriving at the port in Qeqertarsuaq, we take a walk around the town, visit the town's church 'Our Lord's Ink House' and continue past the Research Station. The station was built by the University of Copenhagen in approx. 1910, and it houses researchers and students from all over the world every year.

From there we continue the trip to the area by the Røde Elv. Here we settle down, in the middle of nature, and eat our lunch. We enjoy the tranquility and the magnificent nature. The view is, to put it mildly, fantastic, with views of both waterfalls and mountains by water and land.

Qeqertarsuaq was founded in 1773 as a sort of whaling station where whalers wintered to be the first to hunt whales when spring came. Today, the area is one of the world's best places to observe the large bowhead whale.

Also characteristic of the island is the Lyngmark glacier with eternal snow, lush valleys, hot springs and a diverse flora with more than 500 plant species, including quail and orchids. The disused coal mining town of Quillissat, which formerly housed more than 1,400 inhabitants, is also worth hearing stories about.

The lunch consists of delicious food from Hotel Arctic's renowned kitchen.
